Packing light obviously depends on where you are going and how long you’ll be gone. Perhaps it’s squeezing a weekend trip into a single personal item so you can take a budget airline for cheap. Or, maybe it’s backpacking through Europe with only a carry-on.
Regardless of where your next adventure takes you, here is my advice for how to pack light:
- Challenge the need for everything.
- Stick to one color scheme (e.g., black vs. navy).
- Learn how to use sock curls to do your hair.
- Optimize space with vacuum-sealed bags.
- Utilize your pockets! Wearing a bulky sweatshirt or jacket with large pockets can help you in a pinch.
- Find a bag that fits the maximum size, like this Osprey backpack carry-on.
- Pack as few shoes as possible.
- Go for less bulky items, like AirPods vs. over-the-ear noise-canceling headphones.
Ok, we need to talk about shoes more. As a fashionista, minimizing how many shoes I take is tough, especially if I’m going to a wedding and need a nice pair of heels. Here’s the thing: it’s currently 2024, and sneakers are considered fashionable. So, don’t fret about wearing sneakers to the club or out with a cute sundress. No one will blink an eye at you in this day and age.
I also love my Salomon Gore-Tex Trail Runners because they work for walking, hiking, running, and when it’s raining. Now, wearing trail runners with a dress is NOT a cute look, but I’ve done it. Don’t you typically have to ASK people to get your entire body, including shoes, in your photos anyway?
If you’ve ever struggled with packing light — or wondered if you could survive a trip with just a personal item — you’re in the right place. Check out this video to see exactly how I packed everything I needed into a personal item.
